‘Look dad I’m on eagle mountain’ shouts a child as he then hurls himself into a sideways roll down the largest sand dune around. Covered in sand at the base of a huge sand crater he remains face down and refuses to move at his mothers requests. His siblings banter ‘Jack is So dull’ laughing, they sit at a high point of the sand dune before succumbing to the desire to tumble into it’s dry wash, their hair Sandy blond.

‘Hello my names Archy, what are you doing?’
‘Have you ever painted the other side of the world’
‘What’s that bit, is it a hole?’
My new friend Archy. An inquisitive 4/5 year old. His family call him back in unison and loudly. ‘Archy, leave Tom alone, leave Tom alone’.
They were a great bunch all lolling around in that massive sand dune. Poor Archy. ‘I’ll stay here I’m not near Tom’ he shouts from a nearby sand dell.

1998 – We headed off for a long trip north, to Carlisle, stopping off in Armathwaite. Along the river Eden, between majestic landscapes and unbelievable night skies.
It was possibly the first time I’d seen the stars properly. We discovered a place we would return to.

Out, into nature, just off of the path we’re walking. Another path, one less walked.

The Cornish coast… what more is there to say!

At every opportunity leave for the coast!

Sunrise Towards the River EdenI keep a lot of photos. before we all had cameras on our phones, I was out there with my 35mm film SLR snapping away. I worked from photos for this series of small oil paintings. Time, memory, place, all significant. This picture, Sunrise! toward the River Eden across the floodplain.

‘Travel Lodge Sycamore’
Walthamstow CentralMy initial thoughts about coming back to painting trees was trees in front of buildings, that would say everything I needed. A kind of equation. People need trees, people need buildings/homes. And so at the heart of it this is great and positive. On a technical level, colour, branches, the silhouette, the complex arrangements of branches and background…how do I arrive at an end.

Such an amazing campaign to make The Happy Man Tree, tree of the year in 2020. Shame on the housing development for cutting all those trees down.

This Lime is massive, it’s probably the size of four trees! It has about 3 trunks, it’s pulling up the pavement and is working on the fence. I would love to have one of these outside my window! imagine the wildlife and the wonderful shade during Summer.

Where we were married in 2017. Our photos were taken on The Village Square and one of our neighbours designed the square! I love the Acacia Tree, so soft looking in colour and shape but with massive thorns! What a beautiful centre piece.

There is a sense of community surrounding trees.
It would be great to hear your thoughts on that statement.
Finding somewhere to park my van and eat lunch, I’d find myself scouting out the most naturable spot. Seeing so many trees in front of new build homes, where once stood other much older trees, gave me a perfect yet skewed perspective about the way we plan our very local environment. The reality of nature vs concrete, the juxtaposition. Now I’m living closer to London, there is a different kind of tree, one that grows up from the pavement, between the pipes and wires and drainage, between the road and building, above the rattle of The Tube but below the rooftops, occasionally catching the sun.

A wet forest walk at twilight. Three trees, reflecting the sky, Autumnal red Beech leaf litter covers the ground. Dark, cold, limbs reaching out of sight into the dark.

This tree isn’t going to last long in relative terms. It needs to be replaced by another. The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago! To really own this situation we need to pay close attention to what’s happening to our London trees and to our woodland in the UK
Like the others – it grows up from the pavement, between the pipes and wires and drainage, between the road and building, above the rattle of The Tube but below the rooftops, occasionally catching the sun.

'Plane Near Seven Dials'
30x45cm
Acrylic on CanvasLast year I wanted to pick up on a project I’d had at the back of my mind for years and never got started. I’d made sketches but not managed to take them into painting. As Autumn 2019 approached I felt my time, plein air painting, was running out. So I spent some time going out and photographing subjects which I thought might work. The plan was to paint indoors during the winter months from the photographs, this never happened!! THEN….lockdown!
I started painting. The results were not great, the photographs were not great, I learned a lot about setting up a painting studio. I’m continuing to think about this, the more technical side of painting. So, it’s quite an exercise for me, going through this process and still attempting meaningful work, It’s a combination of passion & skills. I didn’t feel ready to show this work on Instagram but through a conversation about @artistsurportpledge with an artist friend of mine one of the paintings sold!
